Chemistry Ornaments: Star Wars for Science

So for our last lab this semester, we made ornaments!

1. First you grab a lovely piece of metal. It can be what ever size you want, small or big.


2. Then you tape the entire piece of metal until it looks like a little mummy.
3. Once your metal is mummified, you can cut a design into the tape. Whatever you cut out will eventually rust, so make sure that any metal showing is what you actually want to rust out.



4. Once your design is cut out, place the piece of metal in a container full of hydrochloric acid. Make sure that the piece of metal is completely submerged, and keep it in the acid for around 15 to 20 minutes.
5. After your piece of metal is ready, use a pair of tongs to pull it out from the acid. Then place the metal in tub full of copper sulfate for another 20 minutes, or until you see your design rusted out.
